Thought It Was 'The End', Only to Return to a Changed Genre - Chapter 88
Shane grimaced.
“Towards you, does she ever ask for help?”
“You’ve seen how spoiled Master is, haven’t you? The moment she opens her mouth, it’s ‘Do this, do that, I can’t live without you…'”
“…….”
Lloyd twisted his lips into a smile.
“Oh, but she wouldn’t say that to you.”
“Cheeky little fxxker.”
“If looks could kill, I would have been dead the day Master brought me here.”
Lloyd laughed brightly for once. If Adeline had seen it, she would have clapped her hands and declared it a holiday.
Unlike Adeline, who had naively taken pity on what she thought was a mere street urchin, Shane had seen right through Lloyd’s origins and nature the first time he laid eyes on him.
Shane had tried several times to keep Lloyd away from Adeline. After all, no one in their right mind would want a child raised to be an assassin close to someone precious.
But in the end, he couldn’t go against Adeline’s wishes.
Lloyd was the same. He repeatedly told Adeline that Shane was crazy because he wanted her to stay away from him.
“Don’t make me laugh. You know better than anyone that I can’t touch you, which is why you’re acting so smug.”
“You’ll have to endure this much if you’re going to torment Master.”
It was something he would never say in front of Adeline. She hated it when Lloyd called her master.
“Aren’t you going to sleep? Should I bring your nightwear?”
“Just the thought of you attending to me makes me sick. …Just keep watch for a while.”
The man who disliked everyone except Adeline had a lot to say.
To Lloyd, Shane’s behavior bordered on misanthropy. He had no interest in anyone but Adeline, yet others who desired him irritated him to no end. It was natural to become annoyed when unwanted attention persisted.
Lloyd watched Shane’s irritable steps as he left the bedroom, then looked at the deeply sleeping Adeline.
‘How did she end up taming someone like that?’
Why’d she even go through the trouble.
When Lloyd first met Adeline, Shane was already like this.
Lucian might call him a demon, but Lloyd thought Shane was worse.
If it weren’t for Shane, Adeline’s life would have been much smoother.
She wouldn’t have had to give up everything and hide away in that shabby house.
And she wouldn’t be suffering like this, being held captive.
Lloyd was sure Shane felt the same way when he looked at him.
Wondering why he had tamed such a creature. Surely, there were better options than this….
But unlike Shane, Lloyd had received a clear promise.
“Come with me. I’ll be the place where you belong. I’ll never abandon you.”
Why was his heart drawn to those cliched words?
Even though he thought it was a promise that was impossible to be kept, Lloyd grasped her hand as if bewitched. In that moment, she looked like a goddess. If she didn’t keep her promise, he could kill her then.
However, now, eight years later, Adeline truly never abandoned him in any circumstance.
Even when she gave up everything and left the capital, she took him with her.
She would whine that she would have died long ago without him, but Lloyd knew that she could manage everything quite well on her own.
Adeline was someone who could live without anyone’s help. Left alone, she would find a way to manage.
When she fled, she didn’t need to take him with her, nor did she need to live with him for five years. When he asked why she brought him along, Adeline responded as if she had heard the most foolish question.
“Because I promised.”
Lloyd sighed as he looked down at Adeline. Her eyes were raw and red from crying. By tomorrow, they would be swollen. He needed to prepare some ice.
To Lloyd, Adeline was his one and only master, parent, and sibling.
She was the name of every relationship that existed in the world. He believed that his reason for being born was to be of use to her.
He didn’t know what Adeline was thinking or why she was doing this. He didn’t think she needed to tell him.
As long as she kept her promise, as long as she didn’t leave him behind.
