Villain, Let Me Touch You! - Chapter 68
“By the way, we’re having a lot of trouble figuring out what to do with the body.”
As if to put me at ease, Nick confessed his concerns to me.
“Surely, you just have to hold a funeral for him?”
“No one seems to be stepping up to arrange Kama Jin’s funeral. It seems he didn’t have close friends.”
“What about a lover?”
“A lover?” Nick looked genuinely surprised.
“You didn’t know?” I asked.
Nick, I thought you’d investigated this guy thoroughly. If he ascertained that there were no signs of homicide, he must have at least visually confirmed the body. How could he have missed the imprint?
“Kama had an imprint.”
“Impossible. There was no name on his body.”
“Are you sure?”
“Why would I lie? If you don’t believe me, I’ll show you. Please step down—we’re here.”
True to Nick’s word, the carriage came to a halt, and after what seemed like an eternity, they finished setting up the staircase so we could get off.
“Be careful.”
Nick disembarked first and escorted me out. The police station gatekeepers saluted Nick, and I bowed slightly before following closely behind him.
“You son of a b***h, you stole my money, where do you get off talking about it?”
“Boss, when did I steal your money? Do you have any evidence? Any proof?”
“Why are you causing a ruckus here? Shut your mouth!”
It was a commotion like no other. As we opened the door and passed through the corridor, turning the corner, I was greeted with a barrage of expletives. The veins in people’s necks bulged as they cursed up a storm.
“Sorry. It’s noisy, isn’t it? My office is quiet. Please come this way.”
Nick, looking embarrassed, positioned me against the wall.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t surprised. But I was anxious or terrified like Nick seemed to worry about. I was more fascinated by the unruly prisoners who couldn’t seem to hold a conversation because of their boisterousness.
Now that I think about it, 80 percent of the police issues could be resolved through conversation, 18 percent required legal proceedings, and the remaining 2 percent fell within the realm of investigation.
And that two percent included Kama Jin’s death.
“Here we are.”
Nick’s office was at the very back of the precinct.
“Wait,” Nick said, and entered the office.
There was some rustling from inside. It seemed like he was organizing, but why did it sound like things were being broken as well?
A few minutes later, Nick reappeared with a slightly flustered expression.
“I apologize for the mess. I don’t usually tidy up around here.”
I had heard sounds like he was cleaning earlier but pretended not to notice.
“Tell me everything you’ve found out about Kama Jin.”
Nick willingly complied with my request. “There isn’t much information.”
He rummaged through his desk and found some documents, which he placed in front of me. I quickly flipped through them.
- Kama Jin, male, 24 years old, orphaned, no family, specialized in imprint research at the academy, transferred to a private research institution five months ago, no issues with acquaintances, no suspicion of homicide, participated as staff in the World Fair imprint research presentation.
“Is this all?”
“I plan to supplement more information going forward. That’s why we needed to take you in for questioning, Miss Rienna. We received a tip that you and Kama Jin met on the day of the World Fair research presentation.”
I could now understand why Nick sought me out. He was retracing Kama Jin’s movements on the day he died.
To uncover the reason for suicide?
I had a feeling it wasn’t as simple as that. There had to be a specific reason for Nick’s actions.
“Let me ask you one question. Nick. Do you think Kama was murdered?”
