Villain, Let Me Touch You! - Chapter 70
The coroner held out a pair of gloves. I deftly slipped the gloves on and walked over to the autopsy table. Nick and the forensic technician fell silent as I took a moment of reflection, recalling my past encounter with Kama.
There was a stillness in the autopsy room.
Mr. Kama, thank you for your help back then, and even though we parted in a hurry, I wanted to treat you to a meal when we met again. I was a little surprised that it was Chloe you imprinted with, but you were a good enough person that I wanted to cheer you on, even though I knew it wasn’t meant to be.
I silently conveyed words that would never reach him now.
If something happened to you that was so hard that you had to take your own life, I’ll find out. And if you had to die because of someone else, I’ll find the person responsible for leading you to that death.
Tears threatened to fall.
I suppose this does save me the money of having to buy you a meal.
After forcing a joke to contain my true feelings, I finally gathered the courage to touch Kama Jin’s body.
I cautiously placed my hand on his neck.
– Asphyxiation.
“…!”
Goosebumps broke out all over my body. I stepped back from the autopsy table, visibly startled.
“What’s wrong?”
The coroner and Nick approached me urgently.
“Oh, no. It’s nothing. I was just a bit surprised.”
“Well, I’ve found that people who touch a corpse for the first time are often freaked out by the sensation because it doesn’t have the warmth of a living body.”
The coroner offered an explanation on my behalf. I awkwardly smiled.
The reason for my surprise was the manifestation of my ability.
Can I uncover the cause of his death?
I needed to do further testing to verify if it was limited to Kama Jin or if it worked on other corpses.
“Sorry, but… may I have a private moment with Mr. Kama?”
The medical examiner looked at Nick.
I had explained in detail to Nick about my connection with Kama Jin.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had the chance to thank him properly.”
“Do whatever you think you need to do. There’s no danger here in the autopsy room. We can step outside for a smoke.”
They said they wouldn’t take long. I nodded and waited for them to leave.
“And please don’t touch anything else. There might be dangerous substances, as you know.”
“Don’t worry. I’m just going to say goodbye to Mr. Kama.”
I bluffed.
I waited for the sound of their footsteps to fade away. After enough time had passed, I opened the mortuary cabinet closest to me.
A white-haired grandmother appeared. I expressed condolences to the grandmother, who had become my experimental subject for a moment, and gently cupped her cheek.
“Nothing.”
No signs, no letters,
I covered the grandmother’s head with the cloth and opened the adjacent compartment. This time, it was a young girl. Suddenly, a heavy stone seemed to fall onto my chest.
“I’m sorry, sweetie,” I said out loud and cupped her cheek.
I held it longer than the other times, hoping against hope that I could find any signs on her and perhaps alleviate the injustice she might have faced.
But once again, my abilities didn’t manifest.
Next, and the next. I checked a total of five bodies but not once did my powers work.
I turned back to the autopsy table and looked down at Kama Jin.
Helios, Benz, and Kama—my abilities were only triggered by these three people. What could be the commonality among them, excluding the fact that they were all men? Their social status, birthplace, and life experiences were all different.
Why does it work only on these people?!
Finding that answer seemed crucial to unravel the mystery of Kama Jin’s death.
Come on, brain, work!
I clenched my head as if hitting a malfunctioning vending machine, hoping for something to come out – like it did sometimes when I needed soda money. I was desperate for anything to come out.
And then it clicked.
I remembered something.
Chloe Dorian.
She was the one thing the three of them had in common.
