Judith stood behind Kaizen, pressing both hands tightly over her ears.
Kaizen had his eye on the scope, aiming the muzzle at a tree leaf, waiting for the right moment. As he concentrated, even suppressing his breathing, it created an illusion as if time had stopped around him.
The moment a leaf, unable to withstand the winter wind, fell and fluttered,
Bang!
The gunshot rang out. Simultaneously, the leaf dancing down to the ground disappeared.
“Wow!”
Judith walked excitedly towards the tree.
Near the tree, there were many leaves that had either turned to powder from the shot or had half of them blown away. Not a single one remained intact.
“Lord Kaizen! That’s amazing!”
There was a bit of genuine admiration mixed in her exclamation. Judith showed both her palms to Kaizen.
“100% accuracy! You didn’t miss a single one!”
“You should come back now. It’s dangerous.”
He doesn’t even enjoy being praised. Judith deliberately walked slowly, emphasizing once more.
“Your marksmanship is excellent too, my lord!”
“…You flatter me.”
As she got closer, she could see it. The corners of Kaizen’s mouth were twitching. He was pretending not to be pleased.
‘That’s kind of cute.’
Now even his smile was appealing to her. Her infatuation was severe. Making this self-diagnosis, Judith smiled for Kaizen’s share as well.
“You’ll be able to catch up to this level soon, Your Highness.”
Kaizen said something ridiculous while gesturing for her to come closer.
‘What nonsense… Is that even possible…’
While inwardly objecting, outwardly she approached with an excited face, pretending to be expectant.
It wasn’t difficult to feign an expectant face. Her expression came naturally, as she was looking forward to the excuse of discovering potential shooting skills to snuggle up close.
“It’s heavy.”
As she stood beside him, Kaizen enveloped Judith in his arms, directly adjusting her posture. Judith had to struggle mightily to control the corners of her mouth that threatened to rise.
‘Why are you being so adorable lately? It’s killing me with cuteness.’
Indeed, Kaizen had been noticeably more proactive recently.
Even now, without her having to put on airs saying, “I’m not sure, so please adjust my posture directly, my lord,” he was already positioning himself in the closest possible way. Almost as if he was making a move on her.
‘Then of course I should reciprocate.’
“Given its considerable weight, it’s better to spread your legs to distribute the center of gravity.”
“Like this?”
She slowly pushed her heels back, making her b******s touch the inside of his thighs. Something was pressing against her, clearly the receiving end.
‘Well chosen.’
Judith smiled slightly, repeatedly pulling her foot back and forth, continuously bumping against his center.
“Or is it like this? Or this?”
“Ugh…”
A pained groan spilled out above her head. It was clearly a groan of agony, trying hard to suppress something. Her mood improved twice as much.
Judith spread her legs excessively wide, pressing her lower body completely against his, and then brazenly said,
“This feels the most comfortable!”
“….”
There was no response. His movements became stiff as if he was desperately trying not to be conscious of it.
‘If it’s that troublesome, he could just move away.’
It was amusing and cute. She even wondered if he might be secretly enjoying it despite appearing troubled.
Either way, as long as he didn’t avoid it, that was fine. Judith brought her eye to the scope, pretending not to have found her aim, and called out to Kaizen while tilting her head.
“My lord, can you check if my posture is correct…”
She was just looking for an excuse to press her upper body against him too, but.
Thud.
Through the scope, she saw something black fall abruptly.
Too large to be a wild animal, and unable to fly like a bird. It was closest to a human.
“Ahhh!”
Judith dropped the gun and fell on her backside. When she came to her senses, she slightly regretted screaming so unattractively.
Kaizen immediately rushed towards the figure as if shot from a gun. His visible profile was as stiff as ever, as if he had never been flustered.
Kneeling in front of the fallen person, Kaizen grabbed their hair to lift their head. When Judith confirmed the face, she was startled.
‘It’s a child.’
Though the hair was coarse and the build was unusual, likely of Northern origin, the face was clearly full of youthful features.
Shing—
However, Kaizen showed no mercy. Drawing his sword, he placed the blade against the neck and asked ominously.
“Who sent you?”
Already treating them as an assassin without even being certain. Judith was a bit taken aback by Kaizen’s cold attitude.
‘Wasn’t he weak to small and young things? Is it different with people?’
Though puzzled, she first got up and ran to Kaizen. It was to stop him.
“Wait a moment, Lord Kaizen! The child might be hurt!”
“There’s a possibility they’re a spy.”
“Don’t say such mean things!”
She scolded him while moving the child behind her back. She could feel the dirty child curling up and hiding tightly against her back.
In truth, Judith thought Kaizen’s suspicion was reasonable. A child hiding in a tree at a location where a royal event would soon be held? No one could be certain what intentions might lie behind that appearance.
Yet, the reason she shielded the child was simple.
‘The image of an Imperial Princess isn’t one who would stand by and watch a child being threatened.’
It was to stay true to the behavior pattern of the Imperial Princess she had created.
‘Besides, information isn’t something you can extract through intimidation.’
Judith greeted the child with her specialty harmless smile.
“Hello?”
As she crouched down to meet the child’s eyes, the child blushed and stepped back a couple of paces.
‘If this is acting, it’s excellent.’
While lightly appraising, she reached out to remove a leaf stuck in the child’s hair.
“How did you end up in the tree?”
“…I…”
“Hm? What did you say?”
“Big sister was so pretty… I was peeking…”
Judith narrowed her eyes for a moment, then quickly smiled again. Then she patted the child’s head.
“Where did you learn such pretty words? But, if you disappear without saying anything, won’t your parents worry?”
“Don’t have those…”
“And this isn’t a place you should follow someone to without thinking. My lord, please take the child back.”
She cut off the child’s words before they finished and ordered Kaizen. It was essentially a dismissal.
“I’ll escort them to the carriage. Please return first.”
Kaizen accepted without protest. The child, seemingly reluctant to leave Judith’s side, bit their lip hard.
To someone unaware of the situation, it might look like a child upset at being rejected by someone they like, but well.
“….”
Judith just silently looked down at the child.
It was when the three of them had left the forest and approached the waiting carriage.
“Big sister, your ear for a moment.”
The child shyly tugged at her clothes. Judith obediently bent down to lend her ear.
“—.”
The child’s whisper was brief. Having delivered the message, the child quickly separated and followed Kaizen as if their business was done.
Judith got into the carriage. Looking out the window, she fingered the earlobe that had just received the whisper.
Pfft. A sneer escaped.
‘Aren’t they underestimating me too much?’
