What Became of the Tyrant After the Pregnant Empress Left - Chapter 36
“What is it about?”
“She said she has something urgent to discuss. She is currently waiting in the drawing room…”
“Tell her I am busy and to make a formal appointment to meet later.”
Ysaris casually dismissed Runellia’s visit. She had no time to deal with the Royal Consort’s blind jealousy or disputes now. There was no reason to listen to her.
So she continued walking to her room, but the maid followed.
“She seemed quite urgent.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“Wouldn’t it be better to meet her?”
Stop.
Ysaris halted and turned to look at the maid. The brown-haired woman shrank slightly, knowing her impertinence, but soon straightened her shoulders and faced her.
“I am saying this for Your Majesty’s benefit. Ignoring Her Highness the Royal Consort in this way will not yield good results.”
It sounded like she was offering advice for Ysaris’s benefit, but in reality, it was the opposite. Ysaris understood the maid’s true intentions precisely.
Isn’t she telling Ysaris to cater to the Royal Consort’s whims? It seems her power is perceived to be greater than Ysaris’s, even though she is the Empress.
“Sigh…”
Ysaris chose her words carefully.
She had long known that her maids only pretended to be polite in front of her while actually disregarding her. However, she had not expected them to speak so openly with such a condescending tone.
This must mean that her standing has fallen so low. There is no place left to fall.
Ysaris gazed at the distant sky. She watched the clouds spread across the vast expanse of the sky meaninglessly, then turned her gaze back to the maid.
“Name.”
“Pardon?”
“What is your name?”
The maid hesitated, rolling her eyes briefly, then cautiously spoke her name.
“Laphice Urens.”
“Urens, is it?”
Ysaris was familiar with the family. The Urens Count’s family.
Though the face looked strangely familiar, it seemed she was from the same family as one of the members of the Marquis of Bellane’s entourage, who constantly found fault with Ysaris.
Is it a characteristic of that side to lack brains? Or perhaps they simply don’t know when to keep quiet.
Ysaris scrutinized the maid with an impassive gaze and spoke.
“Did the Royal Consort threaten you, saying she would do something to you if you didn’t bring me?”
“Threaten me? Absolutely not.”
“Then you’re saying you simply placed the Royal Consort’s orders above the needs of me, the Empress. Despite serving me directly.”
“I…!”
Laphice had no time to come up with an excuse, startled by the blatant remark. Ysaris raised a hand to silence her and spoke in a cold voice.
“Lady Urens, you are dismissed. I will recommend you serve the Royal Consort instead of me. Whether she accepts you or not is up to her, of course.”
“Your Majesty!”
Ignoring Laphice’s call, Ysaris continued walking. The now ex-maid, suddenly dismissed, could only awkwardly trail after her without daring to block her way.
If you dare to look down on your master, you must bear the consequences of your damaged reputation.
Ysaris did not look back. She had endured a lot of rudeness because she couldn’t select her maids as she wished, but there was no reason to tolerate such insolent behavior.
Once Urens is gone, which family will plant a spy next?
The thought was brief. Since she planned to escape during this journey, it no longer mattered who came next.
She intended to focus on preparations for her future…
“You’re here at last, Your Majesty.”
Ysaris stopped at the sight of Runellia greeting her in front of her room. The absurdity of the situation left her at a loss as to where to start pointing out the issues.
“This is not the drawing room.”
“I was worried that Your Majesty would refuse to see me, so I came directly. You’ve avoided meeting me several times before.”
“If I refuse your visit, you should leave. Why are you here instead?”
“I just really wanted to see you. It would feel too regretful to send you off on such a long journey without even a proper farewell.”
She’s impossible to reason with.
Ysaris sighed, feeling anew what she had long since realized. She closed her eyes tightly against the throbbing in her head, then opened them and asked,
“What is so important that you came here so stubbornly?”
“Oh my, stubbornly? You don’t even understand my feelings for Your Majesty…”
“Consort.”
Cutting off Runellia’s words, Ysaris coldly demanded she get to the point.
“I do not intend to invest much time in you. Please stop beating around the bush and get to the point.”
Runellia adjusted her twitching lips. She managed to force a smile, but her pride was deeply wounded by being so openly rebuffed in a corridor where servants passed by.
If that’s how it is, she should hit her back just as hard.
“No matter how much you try to keep me in check, it’s useless. Doing so won’t change your role in the journey to the Hertie Kingdom.”
“I wasn’t particularly trying to keep you in check. As for my role?”
“What else? It’s to satisfy His Majesty’s desires wherever and whenever. Kazhan showed consideration by not letting me accompany him on such a rough journey, so it’s bound to be arduous… I wish you luck.”
Her tone was as if she were speaking to a mistress, accompanied by a clear sneer.
