- Chapter 2 - The Ever Cursed Spring of Adulthood
1. The Ever Cursed Spring of Adulthood
When I was younger, I thought that when I became an adult, when I turned 20, the curse would be lifted. It was like a fairy tale curse that supposedly would be broken by finding true love. I had hoped that it would be a lot like fairy tales where a lot tends to change when the protagonist comes of age. However, even after my twentieth birthday had passed, the full bloom of spring and the morning of adulthood, I was still a monster.
I stood in front of the mirror for the first time in a very long time and looked at myself in a new outfit. The dress I would wear to the palace today was the outfit I had made for my coming-of-age ceremony.
My surroundings were filled with the voices of maids admiring my first dress.
“Beautiful.”
It was indeed pretty, even to me. Madam de Waal’s judgment was not wrong. If I were to attend the coming-of-age ceremony, I would undoubtedly be the most eye-catching beauty.
I mean…the dress would be.
The cool blue dress matched me remarkably well, despite my green-scaled body. Although I was slightly taller than most adult men, the lace-adorned design of the dress on the azure fabric made it seem as if I were floating on an ocean wave.
Still…
Yep, they did mean the dress.
“Well, I’ll believe you if you say you’re a water spirit!”
Yes, because of the lizard face.
I glanced at the veil prepared for me. It matched the dress perfectly, adorned with white lace and dotted with closely-set jewels.
It was a veil meant to conceal my hideous face, covered with scales from the nose to the forehead.
My deliberation was short-lived. I sighed.
“Huh…”
The maids, who had been fussing with the hem of my dress, stopped abruptly.
“Take it off,” I said.
I decided not to wear the dress, because I didn’t want to wear something that required concealing my face.
I threw the shawl I had wrapped around my arms at the mirror.
“Bring me something else.”
