A table adorned with red roses was set up in a splendid manner. Emilia’s eyes narrowed, observing the space as if it were meant exclusively for her.
‘What is the hidden agenda here?’
Guided by a maid, she sat at the tea table. With unwavering focus, she stared at Adrian, who was sitting across from her. She couldn’t help but wonder why she had been brought to this secluded space, the Aether Hall of the main palace.
“No need to be tense. I just called you here for a conversation.”
“…I see.”
“Our first meeting may not have gone so well, but we’re on the same side now, aren’t we?”
“The first meeting between us may not have been pleasant, but now, we should stand together, shouldn’t we?”
“I don’t understand why I am on Your Majesty’s side.”
“You’re on my side because you’ve become the wife of Duke Heinrich, my ally.”
It was an absurd statement.
She barely suppressed her emotions and held her teacup tightly.
He must have called her for this kind of conversation.
She lifted her head and met Adrian’s gaze.
“You had something to tell me, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I have a lot to say, actually. There’s much I’m curious about when it comes to you.”
Adrian extended his hand to touch her red hair, sending shivers down her spine from the unpleasant sensation at the tips of her hair. She felt a strong aversion to his obsessive gaze.
“Ask your questions.”
“Well then, let’s start with what intrigues me the most. You’ve met Duke Loren, haven’t you? Does he plan to change his mind?”
“…My father will not forsake his loyalty to the king.”
“I see. A father who gives up his daughter during tough times and clings to his faith in the king. You seem to be abandoned.”
The words “abandoned” weighed heavily on Emilia’s heart. However, she chose not to protest.
Her father not only abandoned her but also tried to use her, whether for the family’s benefit or his own honor.
“It’s unfortunate to see you not denying it. Parents, they’re all the same, sacrificing their children for their own interests. Did I really want to become a king?”
Adrian said mockingly as he took a sip of his tea. He glanced at the cake and macarons on the table and asked Emilia.
“It seems like you’re not enjoying these.”
“I have no particular preference.”
“Looking at you, I realize I haven’t seen a smile on your face. It’s not the time for laughter, I know, but your face is too precious to waste.”
“Your Majesty is not afraid of being alone in this room?”
What was clear was that the king now seemed to underestimate her. Either that, or he knew that she couldn’t take any action.
“I don’t think you’re in a position to kill me here.”
This was true. Invisible eyes were watching them closely.
“I have nothing to lose but Your Majesty does.”
“Perhaps if you were the price to be paid, it wouldn’t be such a bad exchange. Duke Heinrich, may treat you well. Or would you rather have come to be my mistress?”
“….I didn’t want either.”
“In life, you can’t always do what you want. I’m not exempt from that, either.”
As the conversation continued, Emilia felt an underlying tension in the air, and it seemed Adrian was probing her for something, although his intentions remained unclear.
Adrian chuckled and his hand, which had been gently caressing her hair, was now on her shoulder. Her crimson irises seemed to gleam with life as she tightened her grip into a fist. She felt pain as her nails dug into her palm.
“Do you know? The people here will pretend not to see whatever I do to you. I’ve taken an interest in you, and there’s nothing I can’t have.”
“Please, stop.”
Emilia replied, no longer a naive maiden. She had a feeling about what that look in his eyes meant, so she pressed herself tightly against the chair. In this place, she could only rely on herself to protect her body.
She felt a shiver as his fingers caressed her from her shoulder to her arm. When she saw the desire in his eyes, fear gripped her.
His hand left a sticky feeling on her arm, making her face turn pale from discomfort.
Next, Adrian grabbed Emilia’s wrist, examining her reaction.
“Duke Heinrich isn’t so tender, is he? On the other hand, they say I’m quite tender in bed. Aren’t you curious?”
“I’m not… Ugh!”
She was suddenly pulled closer by his powerful grip, making her body lean towards Adrian. He quickly reached out to her and wrapped his hand around her waist.
“Your Majesty, I never desired this, but I am already wed.”
